What Is the Michigan M-STEP Math Test?

The M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress) is the official Michigan statewide math assessment, administered by the Michigan Department of Education to students in grades 3–8. It measures how well students have mastered the grade-level math standards taught in Michigan classrooms, and its results are used for student progress monitoring and school accountability.

The M-STEP math test is delivered online and mixes several question types — traditional multiple-choice, multi-select (choose more than one), and technology-enhanced or open-response items where students drag, plot, or type in an answer. An on-screen calculator is available on the designated upper-grade sections, while the lower grades are non-calculator, so it pays to be fluent with mental and written math.

The math tested grows each year: place value, operations, and fractions in grades 3–5; ratios, percents, integers, and beginning algebra in grade 6; proportional reasoning, rational numbers, geometry, and probability in grade 7; and linear equations, functions, exponents, scientific notation, and the Pythagorean theorem in grade 8. Each grade tab below lists the complete topic set.

Scores are reported on a scaled score with achievement levels that show whether a student is on grade level. With consistent, targeted practice the M-STEP is very manageable — pick your grade below to start. For official details, dates, and reporting, see the Michigan Department of Education.
