What’s on the ACT Math Test?
The ACT is a college-admissions exam accepted by all U.S. colleges. The Math test is all multiple-choice and a calculator is permitted on every question.
The classic ACT Math test has 60 questions in 60 minutes. The enhanced ACT (rolling out in 2025) is shorter and gives more time per question, but the math content stays the same.
ACT Math covers six areas: pre-algebra (numbers, fractions, percentages), elementary algebra (expressions and linear equations), intermediate algebra (quadratics, systems, inequalities), coordinate geometry (lines, slope, graphs), plane geometry (area, volume, angles), and trigonometry (right-triangle ratios).
Scoring: ACT Math is scored from 1 to 36, and the four-section ACT composite is the average of your section scores. A Math score around 24 or higher is above the national average.

Tips to Boost Your ACT Math Score
- Watch the clock — ~1 minute per question; skip and return to hard ones.
- Answer every question — there’s no penalty for guessing.
- Memorize the formulas — the ACT does not give you a formula sheet.
- Use your calculator wisely, but don’t rely on it for simple steps.
