What’s on the SAT Math Test?
The SAT is a college-admissions exam from the College Board. Since 2024 it is fully digital and adaptive: the Math section is split into two modules, and your performance on the first module determines the difficulty of the second.
SAT Math has 44 questions with a 70-minute limit. Most are multiple-choice, with some student-produced “grid-in” responses. A graphing calculator (built-in Desmos) is allowed on every question, and a reference sheet of formulas is provided.
The content is grouped into four areas: Algebra (linear equations and systems), Advanced Math (quadratics, exponentials, and functions), Problem-Solving & Data Analysis (ratios, percentages, and statistics), and Geometry & Trigonometry.
Scoring: the Math section is scored from 200 to 800, and combines with Reading & Writing for a total of 400–1600. A Math score of 600+ is competitive for many colleges.

SAT Math Formulas You Should Know
- Slope: m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁).
- Slope-intercept: y = mx + b.
- Quadratic formula: x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ 2a.
- Area of a circle: A = πr²; circumference C = 2πr.
- Pythagorean theorem: a² + b² = c².
- Percent change: (new − old) ÷ old × 100.
Tips to Boost Your SAT Math Score
- Master the built-in Desmos calculator before test day.
- Answer every question — there is no penalty for guessing.
- Plug in answer choices when algebra gets messy.
- Do the first module carefully — it sets the difficulty (and ceiling) of module two.
