What’s on the CAEC Math Test?

The CAEC (Canadian Adult Education Credential) is Canada’s high-school-equivalency credential, introduced in 2024 to replace the Canadian GED. It has five subtests — Mathematics, Reading, Writing, Science, and Social Studies — and is written on a computer at an official test centre.

The Math test has 42 questions and runs 120 minutes, split into two parts. Part 1 (12 questions, 30 minutes) is a no-calculator section that rewards mental math and estimation. Part 2 (30 questions, 90 minutes) allows a calculator.

The math covers four areas: number sense, patterns and relations (algebra), geometry and measurement, and data management and probability. Before testing, you should be comfortable with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Scoring: each subtest is scored separately, and you must answer at least 55% of the questions correctly to pass that subtest.

Eligibility: the CAEC is for adults without a high school diploma. You can retake individual subtests if needed, so you only re-sit the parts you have not yet passed.

A Simple 4-Week CAEC Math Study Plan

Week 1 — Number sense & basics. Whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and order of operations — practice these without a calculator for Part 1.
Week 2 — Patterns & relations (algebra). Expressions, equations, inequalities, and linear relationships.
Week 3 — Geometry & measurement. Area, perimeter, volume, the Pythagorean theorem, and unit conversions.
Week 4 — Data & timing. Mean, median, mode, probability, and graphs — then take full, timed practice across both parts.

Question 1 of 1010%

Q1 · Number Sense

What is the value of 8 + 3 × (10 − 6)?

  • A) 44
  • B) 20
  • C) 24
  • D) 32
Show answer
B) 20. Brackets first: 10 − 6 = 4; then 3 × 4 = 12; then 8 + 12 = 20.

Q2 · Percent

A $90 coat is discounted 20%. What is the sale price?

  • A) $70
  • B) $72
  • C) $18
  • D) $108
Show answer
B) $72. 90 × (1 − 0.20) = 90 × 0.80 = 72.

Q3 · Algebra

Solve for x: 5x − 3 = 22.

  • A) 4
  • B) 5
  • C) 6
  • D) 19
Show answer
B) 5. 5x = 25, so x = 5.

Q4 · Fractions

What is 2/3 + 1/6?

  • A) 3/9
  • B) 5/6
  • C) 1/2
  • D) 3/6
Show answer
B) 5/6. 2/3 = 4/6, and 4/6 + 1/6 = 5/6.

Q5 · Ratios

A recipe uses 3 cups of flour for 12 cookies. How many cups are needed for 20 cookies?

  • A) 4
  • B) 5
  • C) 6
  • D) 8
Show answer
B) 5. 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 cup per cookie; 0.25 × 20 = 5.

Q6 · Geometry

A rectangle measures 7 m by 4 m. What is its area?

  • A) 11 m²
  • B) 22 m²
  • C) 28 m²
  • D) 14 m²
Show answer
C) 28 m². Area = length × width = 7 × 4 = 28.

Q7 · Geometry

A right triangle has legs of 6 and 8. What is the length of the hypotenuse?

  • A) 10
  • B) 12
  • C) 14
  • D) 48
Show answer
A) 10. √(6² + 8²) = √(36 + 64) = √100 = 10.

Q8 · Exponents

What is 2⁵?

  • A) 10
  • B) 25
  • C) 32
  • D) 16
Show answer
C) 32. 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32.

Q9 · Data

What is the mean of 4, 8, 10, and 14?

  • A) 8
  • B) 9
  • C) 10
  • D) 36
Show answer
B) 9. Sum = 36; 36 ÷ 4 = 9.

Q10 · Probability

A bag holds 3 red and 5 blue marbles. What is the probability of drawing a red marble?

  • A) 3/8
  • B) 3/5
  • C) 5/8
  • D) 1/3
Show answer
A) 3/8. 3 red out of 8 total = 3/8.
