What’s on the SBAC Math Test?

The SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) math test is a state assessment given in grades 3–8 and grade 11, aligned to the Common Core standards. It has two parts: a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT), whose difficulty adjusts to each student’s answers, and a Performance Task (PT) that asks students to apply skills to a real-world problem over an extended session.

Math questions are organized around four claims: Concepts & Procedures, Problem Solving, Communicating Reasoning, and Modeling & Data Analysis. Items include multiple-choice, multi-select, and technology-enhanced and constructed-response types. An on-screen calculator is available on designated sections in the upper grades (grades 6 and up); grades 3–5 are non-calculator.

Results are reported on a vertical scale with four achievement levels — Level 1 (Below Standard), Level 2 (Near Standard), Level 3 (Met Standard), and Level 4 (Exceeded Standard). Choose your grade below for a quick practice quiz, a standards-based 4-week study plan, key topics, and formulas.
