What Is the Texas STAAR Math Test?

The STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) is the official Texas statewide math assessment, administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to students in grades 3–8 (with end-of-course exams in high school). It measures how well students have mastered the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) — the state’s grade-level math standards — and its results are used for student progress and school accountability.

The STAAR math test is delivered online and, since its 2023 redesign, mixes several question types — traditional multiple-choice plus technology-enhanced and open-response items where students drag, plot, or type in their own answer (no more all-multiple-choice). An on-screen calculator is provided on the designated upper-grade sections, while the lower grades are non-calculator, so it pays to be fluent with mental and written math.

The math tested grows each year: place value, operations, and fractions in grades 3–5; ratios, percents, integers, and beginning algebra in grade 6; proportional reasoning, rational numbers, geometry, and probability in grade 7; and linear equations, functions, exponents, scientific notation, and the Pythagorean theorem in grade 8. Each grade tab below lists the complete topic set so you can see exactly what is covered.

Scores are reported on a scale with four performance levels — Did Not Meet, Approaches, Meets, and Masters Grade Level — that show whether a student is on track. With consistent, targeted practice the STAAR is very manageable; pick your grade below to start. For official details, dates, and reporting, see the Texas Assessment site.
