What’s on the HSPT Math Test?
The HSPT (High School Placement Test) is used for admission to many Catholic and private high schools. It is usually taken by 8th-graders and includes five subtests; two of them — Mathematics and Quantitative Skills — measure your math ability.
Mathematics — 64 questions in 45 minutes. This subtest covers arithmetic, elementary algebra, mathematical concepts and problem-solving, and basic geometry.
Quantitative Skills — 52 questions in 30 minutes. This subtest focuses on number series, number manipulation, and geometric and non-geometric comparisons — it rewards logical reasoning and pattern recognition.
Scoring: a calculator is not allowed on either subtest, so practice quick mental math. The HSPT reports standard scores, national percentiles, and a Cognitive Skills Quotient; your math performance feeds the Total Basic Skills and Total Cognitive Skills scores.
