What’s on the HSPT Math Test?

The HSPT (High School Placement Test) is used for admission to many Catholic and private high schools. It is usually taken by 8th-graders and includes five subtests; two of them — Mathematics and Quantitative Skills — measure your math ability.

Mathematics — 64 questions in 45 minutes. This subtest covers arithmetic, elementary algebra, mathematical concepts and problem-solving, and basic geometry.

Quantitative Skills — 52 questions in 30 minutes. This subtest focuses on number series, number manipulation, and geometric and non-geometric comparisons — it rewards logical reasoning and pattern recognition.

Scoring: a calculator is not allowed on either subtest, so practice quick mental math. The HSPT reports standard scores, national percentiles, and a Cognitive Skills Quotient; your math performance feeds the Total Basic Skills and Total Cognitive Skills scores.

Question 1 of 1010%

Q1 · Mathematics

A car travels 150 miles in 3 hours. What is its average speed?

  • A) 45 mph
  • B) 50 mph
  • C) 55 mph
  • D) 60 mph
Show answer
B) 50 mph. 150 ÷ 3 = 50.

Q2 · Mathematics

Solve for x: 4x + 5 = 25.

  • A) 4
  • B) 5
  • C) 6
  • D) 7
Show answer
B) 5. 4x = 20, so x = 5.

Q3 · Mathematics

What is 25% of 80?

  • A) 15
  • B) 20
  • C) 25
  • D) 40
Show answer
B) 20. 0.25 × 80 = 20.

Q4 · Quantitative Skills

What number comes next: 3, 6, 12, 24, ___ ?

  • A) 30
  • B) 36
  • C) 48
  • D) 28
Show answer
C) 48. Each term doubles, so 24 × 2 = 48.

Q5 · Mathematics

What is 3/5 of 60?

  • A) 24
  • B) 30
  • C) 36
  • D) 40
Show answer
C) 36. 60 ÷ 5 = 12, and 12 × 3 = 36.

Q6 · Mathematics

A rectangle has length 8 and width 5. What is its area?

  • A) 13
  • B) 26
  • C) 40
  • D) 45
Show answer
C) 40. Area = length × width = 8 × 5 = 40.

Q7 · Quantitative Skills

Which is the greatest value?

  • A) ½ of 20
  • B) 30% of 40
  • C) 4²
  • D) They are equal
Show answer
C) 4². ½ of 20 = 10, 30% of 40 = 12, and 4² = 16, so 4² is greatest.

Q8 · Mathematics

If x² = 49 and x is positive, what is x?

  • A) 6
  • B) 7
  • C) 8
  • D) 24.5
Show answer
B) 7. √49 = 7.

Q9 · Mathematics

A $20 shirt is marked down 15%. What is the sale price?

  • A) $15
  • B) $17
  • C) $18
  • D) $19
Show answer
B) $17. 20 × (1 − 0.15) = 20 × 0.85 = 17.

Q10 · Quantitative Skills

What number is missing: 2, 5, 11, 23, ___ ?

  • A) 35
  • B) 46
  • C) 47
  • D) 48
Show answer
C) 47. The rule is ×2 + 1: 23 × 2 + 1 = 47.
