What’s on the GED Math Test?
The GED (General Educational Development) is a high-school-equivalency credential made up of four subject tests: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. This page focuses on the Math section, officially called Mathematical Reasoning.
The GED Math test has 46 questions with a 115-minute time limit. It is split into two parts: a short no-calculator section at the start, then a longer section where you may use an on-screen TI-30XS calculator or bring your own. An on-screen formula reference sheet is provided, but knowing the core formulas saves valuable time.
Questions appear in several formats — multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, drag-and-drop, and hot-spot. The content splits into about 45% quantitative problem solving (number sense, ratios, proportions, percentages, basic geometry, and data) and about 55% algebraic problem solving (expressions, equations, inequalities, functions, and graphing).
Scoring: each subject is scored from 100 to 200, and you need 145 to pass. A score of 145–164 earns the high-school-equivalency credential, 165–174 signals “college ready,” and 175–200 can earn college credit.
Eligibility & cost: you generally must be at least 16, not enrolled in high school, and not a high-school graduate (state rules vary). In most states, each subject test costs around $30 or less.
