Quick answer: The ASVAB math is two subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) — word problems — and Mathematics Knowledge (MK) — algebra and geometry. On the computer (CAT-ASVAB) that’s 15 questions each; no calculator is allowed. AR and MK are part of your AFQT score, which determines enlistment eligibility. Use this free ASVAB Math practice test to check your readiness.

What’s on the ASVAB Math Test?

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) determines which military jobs you qualify for and whether you can enlist. Two of its subtests are math, and both count toward your all-important AFQT score.

Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) is made of word problems — ratios, rates, percentages, proportions, and basic algebra in real situations. Mathematics Knowledge (MK) tests algebra, geometry, exponents, and number properties directly.

On the computer-adaptive CAT-ASVAB there are about 15 questions per subtest (the paper version has more). A calculator is not allowed, so build your mental-math speed.

Scoring: AR and MK combine with the verbal subtests to form your AFQT percentile (1–99). Each branch sets a minimum (often around 31–36+) — higher scores open more jobs.

A Simple 4-Week ASVAB Math Study Plan

Week 1 — Arithmetic foundations. Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and rates with the free worksheets.
Week 2 — Word problems (AR). Translate and solve multi-step problems without a calculator.
Week 3 — Algebra (MK). Expressions, equations, exponents, and quadratics.
Week 4 — Geometry & timing. Area, volume, the Pythagorean theorem, and full timed sets. The ASVAB Math Bundle is ideal here.

ASVAB Math Formulas You Should Know

  • Percent: part = percent × whole.
  • Distance: distance = rate × time.
  • Quadratic formula: x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ 2a.
  • Area: rectangle = l × w; triangle = ½bh; circle = πr².
  • Pythagorean theorem: a² + b² = c².
  • Exponent rules: xᵃ·xᵇ = xᵃ⁺ᵇ; (xᵃ)ᵇ = xᵃᵇ.

Tips to Boost Your ASVAB Math Score

  • No calculator — drill arithmetic and estimation.
  • AR and MK both feed the AFQT — don’t neglect either.
  • Translate word problems into equations.
